The problem

Communication via e-mail is now the number one method of communication in everyday working life. E-mails are received, read and processed every minute. We respond to them almost automatically. In Switzerland in particular, we are required to process e-mails quickly in many industries. But emails are not essentially a real-time medium. Attackers exploit this and try to trigger actions in the reader with so-called phishing emails. These are usually malicious in nature and are intended to help the attacker take advantage of the reader’s actions.

Studies show that

There are very precise studies on how long emails are usually viewed before they are categorized: on average, it takes around 12 seconds to get an idea of the content of a pure marketing email. Studies have also shown the following: if a user first looks at an email on their smartphone and finds it strange, the amount of time they spend looking at it increases, as they look at it again more closely when they return to work and then hopefully make the right decision.
Finally, there are studies on looking at emails over the course of a week: the probability of falling for dubious emails increases at the end of the week! The test subjects usually made the most misjudgements about the seriousness of emails on Friday. The timing – just before the weekend – gives potentially successful attackers the opportunity to work on the new victim almost undisturbed for several days before the admin teams react – a very unpleasant scenario!

Various cybersecurity manufacturers have identified precisely these dangers, so that companies are supported by analyzing the content and rendering problematic emails harmless before employees click on them carelessly. However, the technologies used by manufacturers to do this vary greatly, which is why it is worth taking a closer look at various manufacturers. In particular, analyzing the current situation and comparing the requirements helps to find the right manufacturer.

None of these three are spared from attacks! Everyone should therefore be concerned with protecting users from malicious clicks on attached files (the most common gateway for attackers in Switzerland). In times of economic crises and political escapades, there are also many financially strong players on the market who are trying to take advantage of this situation using very sophisticated methods.
